Two groups, in the North East and in West Wales, working in co-operation, set out to standardise their basic safety training and devised a core curriculum which became the foundation of a training scheme which has grown to national proportions.

The scheme, which results in the award of a ‘Safety Passport’ to contractor site personnel, is monitored and controlled by a national steering group known as the Client/Contractor National Safety Group (CCNSG).

Representatives from major clients are nominated by local safety groups to serve on the CCNSG and there is also representation from contractors, training providers and trade unions.

The CCNSG meets regularly to ensure that standards are being maintained and that the content of the training scheme continues to meet current safety legislation and current safety practices.

THE TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT

The two – day training programme covers 4 sessions:

· Behaviour

· Safe Place of Work

· Safe Systems of Work

· Problems and Safe Solutions

Some of the Topics are listed below:

· Safety Behaviour, Rules Standards and the Law

· Working at Heights

· Safe Access and Egress

· Accident and First Aid Procedures

· Fire Precautions and Procedures

· Manual Handling

· Noise

· Working with Cranes and Heavy Equipment

· Equipment Isolation

Well-trained and informed Supervisors are a legal must. Therefore an additional day for supervisors, which emphasises the key role that supervisors have in securing health and safety includes safety communications and risk assessments.

The course itself involves a significant amount of trainee participation. Most contractors’ personnel know something about the topics before they arrive, and lively discussions are often the order of the day.

In presenting the course, the trainers talk with the trainees rather than at them, giving the continuous message “If you can’t do it safely, don’t do it”.

The award of the Safety Passport is subject to the candidate successfully completing 4 multiple-choice test papers.

Successful candidates receive a plasticised photographic pass that is valid for three years. Upon expiry, a one-day Renewal has to be taken.

To assist the administration of the scheme, all records are computerised on a database maintained by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB).

Telephone – 01743 446666
Fax – 01743 442448
E Mail – webcontact@hoistquip.co.uk
Web – www.hoistquip.co.uk

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://hoistquip.blogspot.com/2008/06/training-course-ccnsg-passport-training.html' title='Training Course - NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health & Safety

NEBOSH NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN CONSTRUCTION HEALTH & SAFETY

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Safety & Health has been recognised for many years as the basis for a sound, broad introduction to the fundamentals of occupational health and safety for those working in the construction industry. The syllabus and means of assessment are to take account of current developments both in health and safety and in vocational assessment.

Accidents and work-related ill health affect all types of workplaces and occupations but are particularly significant in construction work. In the years 2001/02 there were 249 people killed at work and of those almost one-third (79) worked in the construction industry. Such deaths represent the tip of an unacceptable iceberg of harm done to people at work. In the same year, it is estimated that over one million people were injured at work, with injuries to construction workers featuring highly amongst these. In addition at least two million people were suffering some form of ill health caused by their work and, again, the prevalence of occupational ill health within the construction industry is above average. Construction workers are more likely to suffer musculoskeletal disorders than most other workers, and over five times more likely to contract an asbestos related disease.

Work related accidents and ill health are costly, not only in terms of individual human suffering but also financially – both to employers and to society as a whole. An estimated 25 million working days are lost each year as a result of workplace accidents and ill health, with a cost to the British economy of around 33-5 billion. The cost to British employers is estimated to be about “2.5 billion a year. When non-injury accidental events are included, the costs are likely to be twice these figures.

Construction employers who fail to manage health and safety adequately not only run the risk of having to meet those additional costs but may also face enforcement action, including prosecution in the criminal courts, by the regulatory authorities. This is apart from the personal suffering that they may inflict on those whom they employ and others that may be affected by their activities. While prosecution is a relatively rare occurrence, civil actions for the negligence of an employer are becoming increasingly more common and costly.

With this background, the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Safety and Health aims to provide those making day-to-day decisions in construction work with a broad knowledge of health and safety in order to ensure that the health and safety implications of their decisions are properly taken into account. The vast majority of occupational injuries and incidents of ill health are avoidable by good health and safety management, and good health and safety management should be recognised as an essential element of good overall management.

SYLLABUS:

· Foundations in construction health and safety

· Policy

· Organising for Health and Safety in construction

· Promoting a positive health and safety culture

· Risk assessment

· Principles of control

· General site issues– hazards and control

· Work at height– hazards and control

· Excavation work and confined spaces– hazards and control

· Demolition – hazards and control

· Movement of people and vehicles – hazards and control

· Work equipment – hazards and control

· Manual and mechanical handling – hazards and control

· Electrical hazards and control

· Fire hazards and control

· Chemical and biological health hazards and control

· Physical and psychological health – hazards and control

· Incident investigation, recording and reporting

· Monitoring, review and audit

Telephone – 01743 446666
Fax – 01743 442448
E Mail – webcontact@hoistquip.co.uk
Web – http://www.hoistquip.co.uk/

Training Course - Nebosh Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management

NEBOSH CERTIFICATE IN FIRE SAFETY & RISK MANAGEMENT

With the adoption of risk based fire safety solutions under the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations in 1997, the onus for providing a work environment safe from fire moved away from the Fire & Rescue Service Inspector to the owner/occupier/manager of premises used as places of work.

This has been further developed by the introduction of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO) 2005, which has repealed the Fire Precautions Act 1971 and the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997, and also abolished the Fire Certificate.

Fire risks change all the time in any occupied building, and the solutions and systems put in place as a result of the initial risk assessment must be constantly reviewed and monitored to ensure they remain appropriate and effective. Risk based solutions for fire safety also depends, for their effectiveness, on every employee understanding the rationale behind certain measures and appreciating the consequences of any lapse or failure. This means that there is an ongoing need for training and commitment on the part of everyone in a company.

Candidates who already hold a NEBOSH National General Certificate or Construction Certificate (achieved within the last 5 years) can undertake the course, run over 4 days, which consists of the following elements:

· Managing Fire Safety
· Principles of Fire and Explosion
· Causes and Prevention of Fires
· Fire Protection in Buildings
· Safety of People in the Event of a Fire
· Fire Risk Assessment

However, for those candidates who do not hold a NEBOSH Certificate, the course will include part of the NEBOSH General Certificate syllabus. This course will run over 10 days and consists of the following elements:

· Health & Safety Foundations
· Policy
· Organising for Health & Safety
· Promoting a Positive Health & Safety Culture
· Risk Assessment
· Principles of Control
· Incident Investigation, Recording and Reporting
· Monitoring, Review and Audit
· Managing Fire Safety
· Principles of Fire and Explosion
· Causes and Prevention of Fires
· Fire Protection in Buildings
· Safety of People in the Event of a Fire
· Fire Risk Assessment

Telephone – 01743 446666
Fax – 01743 442448
E Mail – webcontact@hoistquip.co.uk
Web – http://www.hoistquip.co.uk/

Training Course - NEBOSH National General Certificate

NEBOSH NATIONAL GENERAL CERTIFICATE

The NEBOSH National General Certificate has been recognised for many years as the basis for a sound, broad introduction to the fundamentals of occupational health and safety.
